Chloë Grace Moretz does a terrific job in her performance as an outcast who hides her grief over being considered a monster behind an aura of cartoonish exuberance, while Ahmed disappears into the role of the straightlaced and ever-suffering paragon that is Ballister. Nimona, much like the film’s namesake, is colorful, bubbly, and full of surprises. It’s not long, however, before Nimona’s connection to the history of the kingdom is unearthed, leaving Ballister to question just who or what he can actually trust anymore. He’s not alone though: Enter Nimona, a hell-raising shape-shifter with a penchant for mischief who imagines herself as the sidekick to the kingdom’s newest villain. Disgraced, dishonored, and inadvertently disfigured by his lover Ambrosius Goldenloin (Eugene Lee Yang), Ballister must search for the identity of the true culprits in order to clear his name. Set in a futuristic medieval world, the film follows the story of Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight who is framed for the murder of the kingdom’s ruler on the biggest day of his life.
